OMG. Kartchner Caverns! http://kartchnercaverns.com/ This is worth paying a hefty entrance fee. The caverns are located about 50 miles south of Tucson, Az. The place has a well-interpreted gallery for cave nerds like myself and a cute gift shop to buy plenty of post cards, since NO CAMERAS are allowed on the tour. Here's a list of things to NOT BRING with you for the cavern tour:
1. Kids with cute, squeeking shoes (you know the kind, with every step the kid takes, the shoes SQUEEK!) Bring the kid, not the shoes!
2. Lack of humor! Have fun! More than likely, the guide has done this over 5400 times and likes to poke fun at people. So laugh & take part in the discussion.
3. Attitude! You're in the caverns domain. Treat it like a sacred place. Respect the caverns & don't touch ANYTHING.
We had to get lightly misted before entering the caverns; just so our dust/hair/lint will not contaminate the caverns. It is a living place beneath the ground. We're inside a gigantic womb! Weird, but it's true. The caverns breathe (inhale & exhale) and take-in moisture along with depositing it (& the minerals) to make the various formations.
I really think I'm hooked on caves. I have visited a few in California and the Timpanogoes in Utah. Now, in Arizona I have visited this beautiful, living place: Kartchner Caverns.
Did you know we have Ice caves as well? I didn't! So what have you done lately?
