South Rim

After three years living in Arizona, we finally drove to the South Rim Grand Canyon. We stayed in the small town of Williams which is about 50 miles south of the main entrance. Unfortunately, on the day we arrived, the National Forest had prescribed burns everywhere. BUT, the views of the canyon were not obscured by the smoke. Since the weather is cooler, it is relatively safe to burn the dead wood which were scattered in neat piles throughout the forest. It is an odd thing to witness; the forest burning, although this is an old practice dating back for several generations.

When we arrived at the Grand Canyon, we parked the Jeep and walked the Rim. If you can walk then do so. Don't miss out on walking along the rim of the Grand Canyon. Sure, there is a shuttle around the rim, but you miss out by not physically standing on the rim to see the inspiring views of the Colorado River; dazed hikers from Germany; updrafts of the canyon wind; ravens and condors soaring above; feeling like you can touch the clouds. Perfect. The super part, we walked all the way and then boarded the shuttle for the trip back. Good idea when it is 85 degrees outside.

We stayed at the canyon from 9 in the morning until 5 in the afternoon. For our next trip to the canyon, we will stay on the rim. Just so we can watch the sun rise and set. Plus, hike the rim whenever and enjoy the views without the sleepy tourists.
